Help fight diseases

Folding@Home

Folding@Home works by connecting your computer to servers used by universities and research institutes to help with calculations to simulate disease proteins, giving them a better understanding of how diseases behave and making it easier to develop medicines and other remedies to combat them.

Once you've installed the program, you can choose between Alzheimer's, Cancer, Huntington's, Parkinson's, or "any disease" via the internet (Web control) or the program on your computer (advanced control). The latter allows the program to automatically assign you "workunits (WU)" that help fight COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).

To install this program, go here

Once the program is installed and you start it, you'll access the web control in your browser, where you can proceed as "anonymous" or create a username. If you want a custom name, click "Get a passkey", then enter your desired username and an email address where you want them to send the "passkey".

1. Once you receive the email, enter your name in the "Name" field.

2. If you want to join PC & HiFi's Folding team, information is available here. Simply copy the "Team ID" to the Team ID box on the Folding@home page.

 3. Then copy the "passkey" from your email and paste it into the "passkey" field on the Folding@home page.

Everything is then up and running, and you can choose between Full, Medium, and Light, which determines how many system resources you want to make available to the program.

Light: Here, only the Processor (CPU) is used for calculations. This is recommended for laptops and older computers that may have a GPU alongside the CPU. Most cooling solutions will handle this workload and temperature.

Medium: Here, both CPU and GPU are used, but they are not as heavily loaded as in FULL. However, it is important to consider how well the computer case (desktop computer) can dissipate hot air, as there are two components heating up the "box".

Full: Here, both the Processor (CPU) and Graphics Card (GPU) run at 100% and will quickly reach maximum temperature. Ensure you have a well-ventilated case with a proper air cooler for the CPU or water cooling for best performance.

During a FULL test on an AMD Ryzen 3600 with six cores and 12 threads, it reaches 90c at 3.7GHz in a well-ventilated case with the included air cooler (Wraith Stealth).

In the same chassis, a Sapphire 5700XT Nitro+ also sits, with a temperature of around 95c.

Both components are under a load of 98-100%.

In Light mode, the same CPU runs at about 73c and 3.9 - 4.1 GHz.

Feel free to use this program (Open Hardware Monitor) to check the CPU and GPU temperatures.

For older computers with unknown cooling and laptops, please keep an eye on the temperature and use the light setting.

When a component reaches a high temperature, it reduces its GHz/MHz to protect itself from the high temperature, which is harmful to the chip.
