The Kingston A400 is an affordable, reliable 2.5-inch SATA SSD that can give an older desktop or laptop a new lease of life. Replacing a mechanical hard drive with an SSD provides faster start-up, shorter loading times and a considerably more responsive system.
The A400 uses a SATA Rev. 3.0 interface at 6 Gb/s with backward compatibility for SATA Rev. 2.0 at 3 Gb/s, 3D NAND flash memory and a standard 7 mm height that fits most drive mounts and laptop bays. It is available in 240 GB, 480 GB and 960 GB capacities.

240 GB is sufficient for Windows and common applications. The 480 GB model is a good general-purpose choice for everyday use with photos and documents, while 960 GB is more appropriate when games, video or larger archives will also be stored on the SSD.

- The approved operating temperature is 0 °C to 70 °C and the storage temperature is −40 °C to 85 °C.

We recommend the A400 as an affordable way to give an older desktop or laptop a new lease of life. Its main strength is the ratio between price and the performance improvement over a mechanical hard drive. However, choose an NVMe SSD when the computer has an available M.2 slot with NVMe support; in that situation, SATA becomes the limiting factor and several times the performance is available for a modest additional cost. For write-intensive workloads such as editing video directly on the drive, we recommend a model with a higher TBW rating. We can also clone the old drive so that Windows, applications and files are transferred to the new SSD.
